Apache Tears is a specific type of Black Obsidian, which is a volcanic stone; these ones coming from Southwestern US & Mexico.  The meaning behind the name comes from an American Indian Legend of the First Nations Apache tribe.  They were name after a gruesome & tragic story about the Apache tribe. The below is but a small synopsis of the story about this cultural group:

In the 1870s, a group of Apache warriors met the American Cavalry in battle. They were gravely outnumbered and it was clear that they could not win the battle. Instead of conceding defeat, being captured and murdered, they decided to ride their horses off a cliff to their deaths.

According to the story, when the wives and children of these warriors heard what happened, they cried black tears that turned to stones when they touched the ground where the warriors fell. These stones were left scattered across the desert, where they can now be found.

Apache Tears have a special connection to the mythology of the Apache culture and the ability to recover from grief.

Metaphysically, Apache Tears have a particular affinity with the bereaved and the grief-stricken in addition to all of the properties generally associated with Obsidian in all of its ordinary forms. It is also much gentler in its vibration than other forms of Black Obsidian.  Apache Tears are an excellent stone for protection purposes.  It provides both spiritual grounding and and psychic protection.
